I am a postdoctoral researcher at Argonne National Laboratory. My position is to be mindful of our successes and failures if we want to manage them smartly. For several years I had been the only female professional/student in my team as a result of which, I unconsciously used to see my actions and accomplishments through the eyes of people around me. So I came up with a plan for managing my mistakes and fear of failure. My agenda is based on three clauses (i) taking control of my goals: I learned that if I accept responsibility for my goals, I have the necessary resilience in case I am not successful. (ii) Keeping a non-judging attitude: it isn’t the failure that is a problem, the issue is the negativity that follows after failure. (iii) Giving myself sufficient recovery time: think what can be done differently next time. Once the recovery time is over, it is time to move on.
