Dr. Palma Buttles-Valdez is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff and Director of Special Programs in the Office of the CTO at the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. Palma also holds an appointment at the University of Texas at Austin as a Senior Research Fellow. At the SEI she is responsible for leading the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative where she guides efforts to conceptualize, define, nurture and cultivate diversity and an inclusive work environment. In her role as Director of Special Programs in the Office of the CTO, she leads effort related to the SEI’s research portfolio and improving organizational capability. For over 15 years, Palma has assisted organization in successfully addressing their critical human capital, organizational culture and behavioral issues.

Palma leads and participates on research projects focused on patterned human behavior, Cybersecurity and Mesoamerican Archaeology. She serves on master’s theses and doctoral dissertation committees at the University of Texas at Austin. Palma presents frequently at conferences and has been an invited keynote speaker in the United States and Internationally. Palma has authored and co-authored several publications.
