Nanette Veilleux is a professor in the computer science and informatics department at Simmons College. Her research interests include computational models of speech, as well as investigations of pedagogical methods in STEM education. The first topic involves primary research into modeling categories of English prosody (emphasis and phrasing) and can be used to improve automatic speech understanding. The latter involves investigating approaches to pedagogy that encourage students to enter, remain and thrive in STEM disciplines. This includes community building to provide a sense of belonging and adding socially relevant content to standard Computer Science courses that resonates with students’ interests.
